Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that studies and diagnoses improper occlusion and positioning of teeth, trying to prevent these malocclusions from occurring and treating them if they do occur. The word “orthodontics” is derived from the Greek words “ortho” meaning “straight” and “odons” meaning “teeth”. Although the word means straight teeth, orthodontics goes beyond this meaning and today it not only treats teeth but also facial irregularities. Orthodontics aligns the position of the lower and upper jaws with respect to the cranial base and ensures that the teeth are arranged in a straight manner.
